Chuck Goes To Trial

June 3rd 2006 Chuck and the boys attended a Shoot to Retrieve Fun Trial put on by the local gundog club. Here he learns socialization skills with other dogs and people, and gets bird work in the puppy field. He shows good bird drive and stayed actively engaged in the pursuit, once he understood what we where after.

Birds are placed randomly in a field. I checkcord Chuck crosswind into the scent cone, the first couple he charged into the bird trying to find out what it was, after that he began to staunch up for the point. This training is a test of his bird drive, nose and use of the scent cone. No corrections where given. This is early bird work and it needs to be fun.

Chuck has been bathed bi-weekly and given Bio-Spot brand flea and Tick monthly. He accepts bathing and inspection well, he is playful and likes to put his paws on me, that is also a sign of dominance but in Chuck’s case I think its fun for him. I have not had the need to clean his teeth yet. He has not been to the vet yet. He likes his brushing sessions and tolerates pulling of stickers well. He is sensitive around the long hair on his hindquarters. His head should be secured when brushing that area. He shows no aggression during grooming. If anything he will lay down for an escape tactic.

Chuck has been in training to stay on a pet bed in the office and roam the house for inspection. He minds well and will stay on the bed for up to 10 minutes. He will escape off the bed if not watched. The length of time on the bed will increase as training proceeds. He will potty on the floor if not watched, as I catch him and correct this he will become more respectful of the house. He has spent most of his life in a kennel without early potty training. This will take a little extra effort because of his age. He will not eat until told too and drinks on command. Drinking on command is helpful while hunting to make the dogs hydrate themselves. Chuck understand the quite command which is spoken and with a clinch fist under the jaw as a visual signal. When he is heeling he enters and exits doors properly (last in – last out). Not heeled watch-out.

Chuck has traveled often in a crate in the back of the pickup and also loose in the cab of the pickup. After the initial entrance he settles in and usually lies down and travels well. He has not shown signs of carsickness. He has been walked in busy parking lots and handles those conditions OK. He will kennel on command in a vehicle, on a bed, in the pond, on to and ATV, in a RV.

Chuck has only a few road crossing experiences as we start into bird training he will get more experience with road crossings and other vehicle dangers. He rides and ATV and enjoys it allot.

Chuck knows and follows the heel command 80% of the time - 100% without extractions- time will improve this.

He has not been taught the lay down command. He will jump up and on people this is another habit that will need improvement with training and as his self-confidence builds this will trait will lessen.

He spends 2 hrs on training days tied on the chain gang he will sleep on the chain.

He will stop and stand still without command by pulling with a quick small jerk on his collar; he will also stop and stand from the heel position. The verbal release for this is OK with a fiscal release of slight forward tap with finger behind his ear.

Gun conditioning has been with a BB gun and loud crack of bullwhip so far. Shotgun conditioning will come when bird work starts.

He retrieves to hand as game. Bird work should show true want to retrieve or not.

Chuck (center) spends his time on the chain gang.

When you tie dogs to a common chain as they pull and resist the chain they condition each other to be tied out, they calm quickly . Also by feeding them shortly after they calm they accept the chain gang quickly as good stuff. They spend a lot of time here waiting their turn for training.
